The Myanmar discovery circuit - Day 9 (afternoon cont.) - The Inle Lake (cont.) - the floating garden area - The 20th of November 2015

(...)

The Intha floating gardens  ("kyunpaw" in local language)  are siad to be created by collecting weeds from the surface and then lashing them together to form metre-thick strips. These are then anchored to a bed of the lake with bamboo poles, and heaped with mud scooped from the bottom. This particular method is said to be advantageous because it can be used regardless of fluctuating levels.

Crops such as cauliflower, tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage, peas , beans and aubergines are grown in the Inle Lake all year around with the surplus being taken by boat to the local markets.

We didn't venture into the inner floating gardens because we would have to be back to Nyaung Shwe soon so we took the little time we had to just look around and admire the scenary.
